The first production CH-47A was delivered to the U.S. Army in August 1962. Chinooks were pressed into service in Vietnam, where they became the "flying trucks" of the U.S. Army, moving cargo, ordnance and transport equipment. Other duties included medical evacuation, firefighting, parachute drops, search and rescue, transport of underslung fuel cells and heavy construction. The CH-47C, powered by two 3,750-hp T55-L-11C engines, is capable of lifting a load nearly equal to the A model's gross weight. The Chinook remains in service with the U.S. Army and many other countries in large numbers. |
Modern
Warfare Collection - Boeing Vertol CH-47 Chinook-U.S. Army In June 1959, the U.S. Army contracted five service-test Chinooks. The first of these was ground tested on April 28, 1961. The second, 59-4983, the subject of this model., made its first flight on September 21, 1961, piloted by Leonard La Vassar. It was painted in an Arctic White and Day-Glo Orange scheme for cold-weather trials in Alaska. |
