Lt. Hermann Goring

WWII

5405 The Albatros D III was a single-seat scout fighter that entered service in early 1917. Equipped with two fixed 7.92 mm LMG 08/15 machine-guns and with a top speed of 109 mph, the DIII was a major asset for the Germans in World War I. Lieutenant Hermann Goring flew this Albatros D III while in command of Jasta 27 (fighting unit). He assumed this prestigious post on May 21, 1917 after accumulating nearly two dozen kills and the Blue Max. 12.88

WWII

5408 The Junkers Ju 88 was a four-seat bomber/dive-bomber. Clearly the most versatile German warplane of the World War II era, the Ju 88s production total reached nearly 15,000 aircraft. It was almost as fast as the fighters of the era, and combined with its superior maneuverability (as a bomber), the Ju 88 proved essential to Luftwaffe operations. The aircraft was equipped with one forward-firing 13 mm MG 131 or two 7.92 mm MG 81 machine-guns, two similar guns in the rear of the cockpit firing aft and two below the fuselage firing aft. The Ju 88 could carry up to 4,409 pounds of bombs 14.88

5333 Often referred to as the “finest heavy bomber” used by either side in World War II, the Avro Lancaster was a British creation crucial to the Allied Forces in blitzing German positions. Lancasters were credited with dropping more than 600,000 tons of high explosives and more than 51 million incendiaries. The aircraft could reach a maximum speed of 287 mph, was equipped with eight 7.7 mm machine-guns, and could carry nearly 40,000 pounds of bomb-load 13.98

With a max speed of 600 mph and a range of 10,000 miles this ever changing 1960's bomber cost more than 1 billion dollars each. B-52's saw extensive service in the 1970's Vietnam War. 12.98

5350-2 The British Camel was credited with destroying more enemy aircraft (1,294) than any other fighter plane of WWI. Although the Camel was responsive and maneuverable, it was tricky to fly because most of the weight was centrally located. One problem of the F-1's was that its rotary engine lost power at higher altitudes, thus reducing performance. The Camel had engines ranging from 110 hp to 150 hp. 8.99

Elsie WWII

5362-2 In 1937 the USAF required a new high performance fighter that had a faster maximum speed, higher rate of climb, and longer range. What the USAF got was the P-38 Lightning. Most notable for its work over the Pacific during WWII, "Ace of Aces" Major Richard I. Bong won 40 victories with this aircraft. The P-38 flew on two 1,475-hp engines and had a max speed of 414 mph. Its armament included four 12.7-mm machine guns, one 20-mm cannon, and 3,200 lbs. of bombs. 9.98

5404-1 In late 1985, the US Air Force introduced the B-1B Lancer to serve as a long-range multi-role strategic bomber. The B-1B was the Air Force’s first “stealth-like” bomber with a radar cross-section one-quarter that of the B-52. It reached a maximum speed of Mach 1.25 and had the ability to take-off at a maximum weight of 477,000 pounds. The Black Widow topped out at 366 mph and had a maximum take-off weight of 36,200 pounds. The aircraft was armed with four 20 mm cannons (lower forward fuselage), four 12.7 mm machine-guns (dorsal barbette) and could carry up to 6,400 pounds worth of bombs 13.98

5365-2 In 1938 the Mosquito was designed as a reconnaissance aircraft, an unarmed bomber that flew so high and fast that armament would be superfluous. The Mosquito had the maneuverability of a fighter yet this bomber could also fly 400 mph. The plywood bomber had a range of 1650 miles. The Mosquito had 4-20mm cannons and 4-7.7 mm machine guns in the nose plus could carry 2000 lbs. of bombs or 1000 lbs. of bombs and 8 rocket projectiles. 11.79

The aircraft was equipped with four 7.62 mm ShKAS machine-guns (some had two 20 mm ShVAK cannons), an option for a 12.7 mm UB machine-gun, and a capacity for 441 pounds of bomb-load on the underwing racks. 9.69

In preparation for World War II, Goodyear built more than 300 anti-submarine blimps of various sizes. Those airships operated from more than 50 bases, flew 55,900 missions and never lost one of the 89,000 merchant and troop ships they escorted.

Today, Goodyear operates blimps throughout the entire United States, but since 1917, it is Akron, Ohio that remains Goodyear’s true home base.

Goodyear’s 200 foot blimps are generally thought of as one of the world’s greatest advertising specimens.
