USS Forrestal that killed 134. He then joined the USS Oriskany VA-163

The Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a
single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft designed to provide close air
support (CAS) of ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and
other ground targets. As a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward
air control, guiding other aircraft against ground targets. It is the
first US Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for CAS. The A-10 is more
commonly known as Warthog or simply Hog. The 'Playtime' was flown by
Captain Paul Johnson during 'Operation Desert Storm'. Captain Johnson
provided SAR cover for a downed US F-14 Tomcat crew for nearly 10 hours
during day 3 of the war. For his bravery, he was awarded the Air Force
Cross and the aircraft is now displayed at the US Air Force Museum at
Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.

The Lockheed F-104C.flew over 5,290 sorties on bombing The pilot that flew this particular aircraft was Squadron Commander Lt. Joe Nevers and the F-104 was adorned with the nose art “Pussy Cat”, which was located on the starboard side of the fuselage. From 1967 to 1975 the serial number became “0-60910” with the 198th TFS PR ANG, Muniz ANGB, San Juan Puerto Rico. In August 1975 the plane was transferred to Lowry AFB, Colorado for preservation. In 1997 it was on the move again this time it was put on display at Wings Over The Rockies Aviation Museum, Denver CO. |

The Brewster Buffalo, or Brewster F2A, was a American
fighter plane which saw extensive service with both Allied and Axis air
forces during World War II. The F2A was the first monoplane fighter
aircraft used by the United States Navy. They were often called the
'flying coffins,' by some American servicemen because of a reputation for
poor construction and performance. Regardless, they were relatively
successful in combat, especially in Finland where Brewster F2A fighters
saw their longest and most intensive service with the Ilmavoimat (Finnish
Air Force), during 1940-48. The US Marine Corps flew F2As at the Battle of
Midway however many were lost (15 of the 25 planes). The grim outcome was
the primary source for the myth of the Brewster being one of the worst
fighters flown in combat. However, the main reasons for the losses
included the obsolescence of F2A-3, inexperience of USMC pilots, who
attempted to enter into a World War I-style dogfight with experienced
Japanese Mitsubishi Zero fighters, and the fact that the Buffalos were
outnumbered and caught at a tactical disadvantage. The Battle of Midway
marked the end of F2A-3's combat career. The surviving airframes were
transported to mainland US as advanced trainers.

Flight 19, five USN TBM
Avenger torpedo bombers from Fort Lauderdale NAS which disappeared on a
training exercise December 5, 1945. The aircraft and crew members were
never found, along with a PBM Mariner seaplane and a crew of 13 that was
sent to look for the missing Avengers. A ship’s captain said that there
was an explosion in the area of his ship and that they had sailed through
an oil slick but there were no signs of wreckage or the crew. The ships
location was in the same area where the PBM would have been so it was
assumed that the explosion and oil was from that flight.
