USA On February 16 1945 as part of a 116 ship
task force USS Bunker Hill was anchored 60 miles off shore from Japan and
began launching its Helldivers and other aircraft against airfields and
engine factories around Tokyo. Hopefully this would distract the enemy and
make it impossible for Japan to send aircraft to repel the US Marine
landing on Iwo Jima on February 19th. These strikes lasted seven days and
destroyed 500 enemy aircraft as
well as factories and several ships. The US lost 88 aircraft of which two
were Helldivers from VB-84.

Built as a company-funded long-range fighter (using major
components from the earlier Beaufort torpedo-bomber), the prototype
Beaufighter first flew on 17 July,1939. The Beaufighter was designed as a
long-range heavy fighter, with many components in common with the Bristol
Beaufort torpedo bomber. It saw service as a night fighter, a torpedo
bomber, a ground attack fighter and an anti-shipping aircraft. By
September 1945 a total of 5,928 had been built in a variety of models and
many continued in front-line service into the end of 1950s. 364 were built
in Australia.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 was a jet fighter developed for the USSR by
Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich. The MiG-15 was one of the first
successful swept-wing jet fighters, and it achieved fame in the skies over
Korea, where early in the war, it outclassed all enemy fighters. The
MiG-15 also served as the starting point for development of the more
advanced MiG-17 which would oppose American fighters over Vietnam in the
1960s. The MiG-15 is believed to have been one of the most numerous jet
aircraft ever made, with over 12,000 built. Licensed foreign production
perhaps raised the total to over 18,000. The Mig-15 is often mentioned
along with the F-86 Sabre in lists of the best fighter aircraft of the
Korean War and in comparison with fighters of other eras.

The MiG-15 (NATO name Fagot) was designed from
information and technology gathered from captured WWII Germans. The main
features of the Mig-15 were its simplicity and swept wings. The MiG-15bis
was an improved single-seat fighter with better cannon, fuel capacity,
avionics and a Klimov turbojet engine developed using an unlicensed
Rolls-Royce Nene engine. All this was put in a strengthened airframe.

When Japan entered WWII the B5N Kate was the standard
torpedo bomber and sank more Allied ships than any other type of Japanese
aircraft. B5N2's played the main role in sinking the carrier Lexington at
Coral Sea,Yorktown at Midway and Hornet at the Battle of Santa Cruz in
October 1942. There were 1,150 B5N1 and B5N2 Torpedo Bombers produced but
by 1944 the Kate had been replaced by the B6N "Jill". The Kate
ended its service being used for Kamikaze attacks leaving no surviving
examples

This
aircraft is known by many names depending on what country used them and/or
the variant of the same airframe. They were AT-6, Harvards, Yale, Texan,
SNJ, Wirraway and a few others. These planes were fully aerobatic and
could present the student pilot with some situations where he learned to
do things correctly or else. These planes were the stepping stones to the
more advanced Spitfires and Mustangs of this era.

By
the mid 1930s the USN realized that the modern fighter would have to be a
mono-wing but development hadn’t even begun. As a stop-gap measure they
ordered the Grumman F3F-2 that was a much improved version of the F2F and
could be in production in a relatively short time. The new aircraft had a
larger engine that increased speed by 33 mph and the rate of climb from
205 to 2750 ft/min. Along with a larger engine came a larger three-bladed
constant-pitch propeller and a larger rudder to compensate the first two
improvements. The improvements also meant the service ceiling was
increased from 27,200 ft to 33,200 ft.

In
1941 the Nakajima B5N2 Kate was getting old and a new more up to date
torpedo bomber was needed. With Japan’s entry into WWII it meant the
Kate would have to continue to be the main Japanese bomber for another 3
years until the B6N “Jill” was ready. Even though the Kate was old it
managed to sink more Allied ships than any other Japanese torpedo bomber.
Once replaced many Kates were modified to serve as maritime
reconnaissance. |

This F3F-2 was flown by future Ace 1st Lt. Robert Galer of VMF-2 in
November 1940. While qualifying for carrier-landings his engine failed and
he had to make an unscheduled water landing. In the early 1980s the
aircraft was located in good condition so it was raised and restored.
Galer’s aircraft is the only original F3F-2 left and is on display in
the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola Florida. There are three
other F3F-2s in existence but they were completely reconstructed using
parts from wrecked aircraft.

The F9F Panther entered service in 1949. It was the first Grumman jet
fighter, first Carrier-Borne Navy jet fighter in combat, first USN jet to
shoot down an enemy airplane, first jet aircraft used by the Blue Angels.
A total of 1,382 F9Fs were made. VF-781 was the first squadron to
volunteer for combat in Korea and were 100% volunteers earning them the
name “Pacemakers”. Ironically Russia was also making this engine under
license for their Mig-15 that would be one of the F9F’s main Korean
adversaries. The F9F flew 78,000 sorties with VF-781 flying 2,721 of them
without a single loss of life. The US Marines flew the Panther until 1957
with some Reserve Units continuing to fly them a few years longer. Some
aircraft were used for advanced pilot training and some became drones.

The F-4J was the last version produced for the
USN and USMC. The “J” version was basically an upgraded “B” version with
new radar and avionics as well as a better engine that required a longer
afterburner nozzle. One of the most noticeable changes to the “J” version
is what isn’t there; the infrared seeker under the nose was deleted. Also
missing was an internal gun but Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles were used
for intercepting. These modifications were carried out on 522 aircraft.
The only USN Vietnam Ace was Lt. Randy
(Duke) Cunningham with 5 victories all in an F-4J. The first “Jolly
Rogers” was VF-17 in 1943 and then VF-61 in 1944. In 1955 VF-84 was
commissioned as the “Vagabonds” and when VF-61 was disestablished in 1959
it wasn’t until 1960 that VF-84 was given the name “Jolly Rogers”. In 1967
while on the USS Independence the VF-84 transitioned to the F-4J. In 1970
the squadron moved to the USS F.D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) and continued to fly
the F-4J until 1972 when they reverted to the F-4B in 1973 and the F-4N in
1974. The transition from the F-4 to the F-14 took place in 1977 when they
moved to the USS Nimitz. In 1995 VF-84 was disestablished and VF-103
(originally - The Sluggers) became the new “Jolly Rogers”.

The 2004 NATO “Tiger Meet” was held in

Germany. The gathering started in 1959 as a social event but developed
into an almost annual invitational opportunity to test flying operations
and exchange of techniques. One team present was also one of the oldest
Tiger Association members; it was the French Armee de’l Air EC 1/12 “Cambresis”.
This is the same squadron that had hosted the 2003 meeting. The aircraft
sent to represent them was Mirage 2000RDI 97/12-YT. The aircraft received
this simple but striking paint scheme while using the basic camouflage
colors.

The "D" variant was the ultimate version
of the F-100 with 1,274 aircraft being produced. The production of the
F-100 ended in August 1959. The F-100D arrived in Southeast Asia in 1962
with its primary mission being close air support and ground attack within
South Vietnam. This role was eventually taken over by the A-7 Corsair II.
The aircraft became affectionately known as “The Hun”, short for “one
HUNdred”. The last F-100 left Vietnam in July 1971 but not before 242 of
these aircraft was lost. The “Hun” was eventually replaced by the F-4
Phantom II and the F-105 Thunderchief.
Formed in February 1940 as the 31st Pursuit Group it became a TFW in 1957,
the same year they converted to F-100Ds. The 31st TFW commanded five F-100
squadrons in South Vietnam. Major Don Schmenk of the 308th TFS, known as
the “Emerald Knights” painted two names on the nose of his F-100D. One was
Carol Ann his daughter and the other was "Mary Jane” along with a little
mouse. The last name and mouse were in honor of his wife.

A-10A Thunderbolt II, 917th TFW, "Peanut"
diecast model aircraft HA1303 1:72In order to develop better camouflage
for Desert Storm , the USAF tested two experimental paint schemes of the
A-10 in 1991. One of the A-10's from 917th TFG (47th TFS) at Barksdale AFB
was selected. It was known as the "Peanut" because of its
special brown paint scheme (the other was known as the "Flipper"
with a similar grey scheme). Both schemes were not adopted. Finally the
aircraft were repainted in the usual grey but never went to Desert Storm.
From 1993 to 1996, based at Aviano Air Base in Italy , the 47th flew 501
sorties as part of the NATO peacekeeping effort in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Flight 19, five USN TBM
Avenger torpedo bombers from Fort Lauderdale NAS which disappeared on a
training exercise December 5, 1945. The aircraft and crew members were
never found, along with a PBM Mariner seaplane and a crew of 13 that was
sent to look for the missing Avengers. A ship’s captain said that there
was an explosion in the area of his ship and that they had sailed through
an oil slick but there were no signs of wreckage or the crew. The ships
location was in the same area where the PBM would have been so it was
assumed that the explosion and oil was from that flight.
