The eight-seat Grumman Amphibian, commonly known as the Goose, flew for the first time in 1937, and proved outstandingly successful. By 1938, twenty had been delivered with many more on order.  Despite its commercial intention, this aircraft saw most of its action in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. Models fitted with anti-icing were used by the Coast Guard in chilly Northern waters.

The Hellcat Story

In 1942 the first production F6F-3 was air-born. The F6F-3 Hellcats were delivered to the Navy by January 16, 1943. By the end of the year over 2500 Hellcats were in use. When production stopped in April of 1944 over 4400 aircraft had been produced for the Navy.

The Airco D was flown overseas by many American fighter pilots from 1918 on.  War surplus DH4s were then sold to and used by the air forces of many European countries.

One of the many notable achievements, the Airco DH4 was flown by Major Leckie and Major Cadbury, when they shot down the infamous German Airship Zeppelin L70.

This aircraft is widely regarded as the finest single engine fighter / bomber of World War 1
