W/Compass Platform Diorama

$33.98

DRW50308

Designed by Willy Messerscmitt, the Me109 was a hugely successful fighter built by Germany. With 30,573 units manufactured, it was produced in higher quantities than any other fighter in history. Indeed, the Me 109 alone accounted for 47% of all German WWII aircraft production! A number of variants were produced over the course of its lifetime, and the availability of the 1475hp Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine gave rise to the G-series. In this “Gustav” series, the G2 was the first production variant that began appearing in 1942.

And now, Dragon’s mouthwatering Warbirds series welcomes a newcomer to its ranks. It’s an Me109G-2 Trop of III./JG 77, the “Trop” signifying it was designed to operate in the extreme heat of North Africa or the Mediterranean. Jagdgeschwader 77 Herz As (“Ace of Hearts”) served in every front at some stage of WWII, but III./JG 77 arrived in North Africa in October 1942. The wing saw extensive combat against the Desert Air Force, and many aces added to their impressive tallies, with a total of 333 aerial victories recorded. The aircraft model itself is superbly produced and finished, painted in a desert camouflage scheme. To make this model unique, the Me109G-2 comes mounted on a compass platform, a special piece of equipment designed to raise the tail of an aircraft to allow it to test its guns on the ground. The diorama base with this special ramp and realistic looking desert landscape makes this a truly inspirational piece to have in any aircraft collection!

A P-47D is the subject of a new Dragon Warbirds release. The finely crafted miniature from Warbirds is a P-47D Razorback version, so-called for the sharp ridge on the upper fuselage behind the pilot’s canopy. The model depicts a P-47D of the 47th Fighter Squadron, which was activated on December 1, 1940 and was initially based in Hawaii. The model bears the colorful logo of “the Turnip Termites” squadron, and the plane is finished in a predominantly silver color. The squadron was credited with shooting down eight Japanese aircraft during the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, while it also went on to serve in other theaters of combat. Interestingly, the 47th Tactical Fighter Squadron is still in existence today flying the A-10 Warthog. This is a spectacular model, and it is enhanced by an authentic-looking scenic base that comes with the scale aircraft model. The diorama shows a section of airfield that is beautifully textured and painted in a most realistic fashion.

The VF-102 Diamondbacks were established on July 1, 1955 in Jacksonville, Florida. Having served on numerous carriers, the Diamondbacks have proven themselves to be one of the most versatile strike fighter squadrons in the Navy. On September 19, 2001 the VF-102 Diamondbacks departed NAS Oceana for the Arabian Sea. In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the squadron began its scheduled deployment as a part of Operation Infinite Justice and began combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During that deployment VF-102 flew 3,346 combat hours and dropped 645 bombs. Following the their return from deployment, the squadron was transferred to NAS Lemoore, California to begin transition training in the Navy’s newest Strike Fighter, the F/A-18F. The Tailcode for VFA-102 is NF. This is the tailcode for CVW-5. VFA-102 recently celebrated their 50th anniversary at Atsugi NAS. In 2005 the "Diamondbacks" celebrated their 50th anniversary at their base in In 2005 they marked their 50th anniversary at their base in Atsugi, Japan.

The Grumman F6F Hellcat started development as an improved F4F Wildcat, but turned into a completely new design sharing a family resemblance to the Wildcat but with no shared parts. VF-84 The Wolf Gang

USS Bunker Hill

$26.98

DRW50128

About VF-84:
During 1944, there were actually two "Jolly Rogers" squadrons in the US Navy. While VF-17 remained as the official "Jolly Rogers," another squadron with the same name entered the Pacific theatre as well. Created by former VF-17 members who were transferred to this new squadron after their first tour, Fighting 84 was officially named "The Wolf Gang." However, because so many members of Fighting 84 were ex-Fighting 17 members, the group came to see themselves as the true "Jolly Rogers." Indeed, there was an official attempt made to secure the "Jolly Rogers" name, given that the original VF-17 had been disestablished at that time. However, the Navy had re-commissioned VF-17 shortly before Hedrick's attempt, and so the request was denied. Ironically, ten years after Fighting 84's disestablishment in 1945, another Fighting 84 would be formed which would adopt the official "Jolly Rogers" name 4 years after their formation. This squadron would go on to adorn their aircraft with the skull-&-crossbones for nearly forty years.

About the F4U-1D Corsair:
In 1942 production of the Corsair began, a lightweight fighter paired with the most powerful engine then available. It was used successfully as a carrier-based fighter bomber by the US Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War 2. It had a distinctive front profile with its inverted gull-wings, necessary to give enough ground clearance for the large propeller. This A total of 12,681 Corsairs were produced.

About the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17):
USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) was an Essex-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, nicknamed "Holiday Express" for her many attacks launched around the end of the year.
Bunker Hill received the Presidential Unit Citation for the period 11 November 1943 to 11 May 1945. In addition, she received 11 battle stars for her World War II service.

About the Me262:
Germany’s Me262 was the world’s very first operational turbojet-powered aircraft, allowing it to outmaneuver and out-sprint Allied fighter escorts. It actually began development in April 1939, and the eventual result was a fighter that marked a significant leap forward in aircraft design. However, the two Jumo 004 jet engines on each fighter were also a weak point, as turbojets were still in their infancy. The average jet engine’s operational lifespan on an Me262 was a mere 12 hours!

Hans-Ulrich Rudel flew some 2,530 combat missions (a world record), during which he destroyed almost 2,000 ground targets (among them 519 tanks, 70 assault craft/landing boats, 150 self-propelled guns, 4 armoured trains and 800 other vehicles; as well as 9 planes [2 IL-2's and 7 fighters]). He also sank a battleship, two cruisers and a destroyer. He went on to become the most decorated soldier in Germany. The combination of a finely detailed scale model, and the markings of an historical fighter ace's plane, makes this a highly prized asset in any model aircraft collection.

During World War II, the Bf 109 (me 109) was the backbone of the Luftwaffe fighter force, serving on all fronts and also in the air forces of its European allies. Even though the superior Fw 190 began to replace the Bf 109 in some units as early as the summer of 1941, production of the Bf 109 actually rose until the closing months of the war and it remained the most numerous Luftwaffe fighter. By war's end, Germany had built over 30,000 Bf 109's. Production of the Bf 109 continued on after the war in Czechoslovakia until 1949 and in Spain until 1958. It remains to this day the most produced fighter in history.

DRW50095

About the Fw190A-5:
Widely regarded as the best German fighter of WW2, a total of around 20,000 Focke Wulf 190s were manufactured. This famous aircraft possessed a excellent performance and superior armament, giving it a decided edge over contemporary Spitfires.

About Major Priller:
Josef Priller was the longest serving Kommodore of JG 26. His craft is instantly recognizable with its black camouflage and the number '13'. Some contend that the number 13 was employed as a reverse form of superstition.

Spitfire Mk. Vb No 249 Sqn

Takali 1942

50123

24.98

About Takali 1942:
British submarines and planes operating from the island fortress of Malta had sent thousands of tons of Axis ships to the bottom of the Mediterranean. Axis air forces were employed to neutralize the island’s defence's to make way for an invasion under the code name Operation HERKULES. The Axis aerial attacks reached severe levels after 21 March 1942. Outnumbered and short of supplies, the island’s British defenders clung on, with a series of deliveries of new Spitfires coming at critical times. In the end it was the Spitfires who saved the day and turned the tide, with the German offensive faltering after mid-May. In total, 500 Axis planes were destroyed or severely damaged, most of these accounted for by the remarkable Spitfire.
