On September 17, 1943, this aircraft, towing a Horse
glider, was attacked by eight Ju 88s. Its pilot, Flight Officer
Norman, refused to jettison his glider and skillfully evaded cannon
and rocket fire from the Ju 88s. The glider crew released themselves
to give Norman a better chance, and he made it to Sale on three
engines following two rocket hits. His tail gunner, Sgt. Grant,
received a DFM for shooting down one of the attackers, while Norman
received a DFC. Following the completion of its service with No. 295
Sq., DG396 was passed to No. 148 (Special Duties) Squadron and
eventually SoC on April 1, 1945.

First flown from RAF Bicester on 25 October 1939, the
Handley Page Halifax entered service with 35 Squadron in November
1940. The Halifax l and ll aircraft were powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin
engines and the Halifax lll was powered by Bristol Hercules engines,
Apart from its role as a heavy bomber, the Halifax lll and later
versions also served in Coastal Command and in paratrooping and glider
towing roles. Yorkshir was the home of 4 and 6 groups Bomber Command
and three Halifax Squadrons were based at Elvington, 77 Squadron, and
two French Air Force Squadrons, 346 (Guyenne) and 347 (Tunsie). The
Yorkshire Air Museum's Halifax reconstruction is based on a section of
the fuselage of Halifax ll, HR792, which carried out an emergency
landing on the Isle of Lewis in 1945. The wings came from Hastings,
TG536,at RAF Catterick. The reconstruction is named 'Friday the
13th" in honour of Halifax, LV907, which survived 128 operations
with 158 Squadron, It is the only surviving Halifax in the world.

The Spitfire Mk.IX was a thoroughbred development of
the classic Mitchell design and was a direct result of the need to
combat the threat posed by the awesome Focke Wulf 190. The improved
design helped to wrestle air superiority back from the Luftwaffe. As
the air war moved to the offensive for the RAF, successful fighter
pilots became household names and were afforded celebrity status. In
May 1943, the Biggin Hill Fighter Wing was close to their landmark
1000th victory and an eager media descended on the Kent station in
order to record the event. By this time, however, the Luftwaffe were
reluctant to lose pilots unnecessarily and engagements were becoming
quite rare, so the 1000th kill proved elusive. On 15th May, Squadron
Leader ‘Jack’ Charles of 611 Squadron led a fighter sweep over
Caen and on this day, the Luftwaffe did come up and fight. Charles was
credited with two Fw190’s and thus claimed the 1000th victory. In a
famous photograph of the day, Charles is seen chalking a 1000 score on
the propeller blade of his Spitfire Mk.IX, surrounded by his fellow pilots.

Designed as a close support aircraft, the
Ju 87 was first flown in 1935. Armed with twin 37mm cannons, the Ju 87
series was crewed by a pilot and a rear-gunner. An elongated U-shaped
crutch located under the fuselage was designed to swing the bomb out
of the way of the propeller. The design included several innovative
features such as automatic dive brakes under both wings that ensured
recovery from an attack dive even if the pilot blacked out during the
6 g pullout. The shape of the inverted gull wings improved
pilot-to-ground visibility and also provided shorter undercarriage
height.

This particular aircraft is remarkable for the livery.
To provide camouflage more suited to the terrain over which it was
operating, Ehrler's early Gustav had been given a coat of washable
paint (including the fuselage cross), to which large irregular patches
of dark green had been added.

The Zero was the first carrier-based fighter that could
out-perform land based planes. Despite warnings from General Chennault
of the Flying Tigers, the U.S. was unprepared for the great
maneuverability and range of the Zero. It wasnt until the F4U and F6F
were produced that the Allies could control the air. CPO Okumura
scored 10 “kills” over Buin September 14, 1943, before being shot
down himself 10 days later over Tuluvu.

No. 180 Squadron was formed at West Raynham,
Norfolk, on 13th September 1942, as a light-bomber squadron equipped
with North American Mitchells. Early in October it moved to Foulsham -
also in Norfolk - and it was from there, on 22nd January 1943, that it
flew its first operational mission against the enemy - a raid on oil
targets at Terneuzen (Ghent) in Belgium.

This astoundingly marked B-24 is considered to have one
of the most colourful crew insignia of all time. 44-40973 The Dragon
and His Tail first flew on 3rd June 1944 and was delivered to the AAF
several days later. This gaudy, glorious and highly recognisable paint
scheme was carried by The Dragon for most of its combat career and
became famous for it. Based in le Shima, a place that was described by
one crew member as a 'lump of coral in the Bonins', it fought
throughout the Pacific as part of the 43rd Bomb Group.

B-24J Liberator USAAF 90th BG, 321st BS, "Booby
Trap", Mindoro, The Phillipines, February 1945 This aircraft is
typical of the natural metal B-24's operated by the 'Jolly Rogers'
(90th BG) in the last year of the war. Booby Trap operated from
McGuire Field, which the 90th Bombardment Group shared with the 380th
BG 'Flying Circus'. The tail markings are well known but less familiar
to most is the fact that the 'Jolly Rogers' also had an A-20 and a
C-47 with the same emblem, the skull and crossed bombs. The crew of
Booby Trap were as follows: Major Stanley P Robeck, Unit Commander; 2
Lt John E Wise Jr, navigator: 2 Lt Irving Weinberg, bombardier; T/Sgt
Leon E Lins, engineer; T/Sgt George J Erickson, radio operator; S/Sgt
Kenneth A Johnson, gunner: S/Sgt George R Rothenberger, gunner: and
S/Sgt James A Bregory, gunner. 44-40193 had made its first flight on

later.

This Consolidated-built machine was amongst the first
B-24s assigned to the 93rd BG, known as "Ted’s Traveling
Circus" after its colorful CO, Col. Ted Timberlake. The
cloverleaf worn by this machine denoted that the bomber had visited
Northern Ireland to undergo modification, while the U-boat silhouette
signified a claim of a German submarine sinking by the crew, while
flying anti-U-boat patrols over the Gulf of Mexico in mid-1942. Flown
to Alconbury in September 1942 as part of the first wave of USAAF
B-34s to arrive in England, 41-23711 participated in the Ploesti raid
of August 1, 1943 and was eventually lost during a mission to Austria
in October of that same year.

This is the West's principal AWACS (Airborne Warning
and Control System) platform. Using the airframe of a Boeing 707-320B
airliner and a massive payload of radar and electronic sensors, the
E-3 AWACS is the flying headquarters for command, control,
communications and intelligence. 71-1407 was the first of two EC-137D
AWACS prototypes. Both were upgraded to E-3A operational standard as
part of the 34 aircraft procured by the USAF. The first production
E-3A flew on October 31, 1975 and delivery was made in March 1977 to
the 552nd AC&CW at Tinker AFB, OK.
